I’ve always felt there to be an odd contradiction between Jaguar: image and reality. Such sensual, glamorous forms, evoking the Champs Élysées or Hollywood Boulevard, yet it’s beneath the leaden skies of Middle England that Jaguar’s soul predominantly calls home. So, in attempting to distil the essence of Jaguar Man, it is useful to separate folklore from reality, cliché from truth – who is this bloke anyway?

Yes, but in the guise of what Jaguar are calling the Jaguar C-X16 ‘production concept’. We’ve had some spy photos of the Jaguar XE before – and we had Jaguar’s sketch of the C-X16 a couple of weeks ago, which told us nothing – and now we’ve got video of the XE (or at least a cut-down XK mule) out testing in Death Valley.

Before driving the BMW X1 xDrive28i, the first model to feature the German carmaker's new turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine, we weren't so sure. The new engine, known as the N20 and set to lead a return of four-cylinder BMW models to North America for the first time since 1998, has been conceived to (indirectly) replace the company's long-running naturally aspirated 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder.
